Our community

South Africa has many social challenges, especially unemployment, which is currently sitting at 32.6%. At BCO, we work hard to uplift our valley by only hiring from the local community where possible. We believe that a person with a positive attitude has so much potential, and we are committed to teaching them the skills they need to succeed. Today, almost all our staff can walk to work, which is a huge benefit to them as reliable and affordable transport in the area is scarce.

In addition, we have partnered with a local farmer to institute an emerging farmer’s programme. BCO’s commitment is to buy all our chillies through the programme, which not only gives us gorgeous, locally grown chillies but also further improves employment in the local community.

Through our emerging farmer’s programme, we use chillies that have been sun-dried (an energy-efficient process that reduces our carbon footprint) before being hand-crushed and paired with golden, GMO-free canola (rapeseed) oil which is sourced from the Overberg. This proximity not only ensures that we get the freshest ingredients but also aligns with our commitment to eco-conscious practices by minimising travel distance.
