Sustainability, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Policy
1. Overview and Scope
Banhoek Chilli Oil (BCO) is a premium chilli oil producer with its major operations in South Africa and a satellite sales presence in the United Kingdom, supplying customers in 19 countries and growing. Our business is founded on quality, consistency and flavour, underpinned by a strong commitment to sustainability, social impact and responsible governance.
This policy applies to:
• All BCO colleagues (including UK and South African operations)
• All physical on-site operations
• All third parties, suppliers and service providers acting for, or on behalf of, BCO
• The goods and services we procure and produce across our value chain.
2. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to provide a clear framework for managing and reducing BCO’s environmental impacts, preventing pollution, supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation and contributing to a low-carbon future.
Equally, this policy formalises BCO’s long-standing commitment to positive social impact and responsible governance. Social upliftment and local economic empowerment are central to our business model, particularly within the communities in which we operate in South Africa.
3. Governance and Accountability
All colleagues and third parties are responsible for complying with this policy. Ultimate accountability rests with the Board and Chief Executive Officer.
Employees involved in procurement must consider environmental, social and ethical factors when selecting suppliers. Where possible, BCO prioritises suppliers that demonstrate alignment with ESG principles.
BCO supports policy delivery through:
• Annual external review or audit processes
• Oversight by a designated sustainability lead
• Ongoing monitoring and internal review.
4. Key Environmental and Social Impacts
BCO recognises that its activities have environmental and social impacts, primarily relating to:
• Raw materials and ingredients, including locally grown chillies and edible oils
• Energy use within production facilities and offices
• Packaging and waste, including glass, labels and production by-products
• Shipping and logistics, both domestic and international
• Business travel and commuting
• Procurement decisions across the supply chain
• Health, safety and risk management, including fire prevention and the safe storage of equipment and substances.
5. Environmental Commitments
BCO is committed to continually improving its environmental performance through practical actions appropriate to the scale of the business. Key commitments include:
• Sourcing locally grown, sun-dried chillies and GMO-free canola (rapeseed) oil to reduce transport emissions and support local agriculture.
• Managing energy consumption with long-term ambition to become 100% off-grid using solar energy.
• Minimising waste through on-site recycling, improved production processes and reduced paper via digital systems.
• Donating redundant IT equipment to local community initiatives where appropriate.
• Reducing logistics emissions by consolidating shipments and avoiding unnecessary transport where possible.
• Continuously improving packaging design to reduce material use and environmental impact.
6. Social Impact and Community Engagement
BCO places strong emphasis on local economic empowerment and community upliftment. Our commitments include:
• Prioritising local employment and skills development.
• Supporting emerging farmers through long-term purchasing commitments.
• Enabling most staff to live within walking distance of work, reducing transport emissions and costs.
• Supporting local initiatives and charitable causes, including the BCO Firefighter Fund and Dwarsrivier Rugby Club.
7. Continuous Improvement and Review
This is a living document and will be reviewed at least annually, or sooner where significant changes occur to BCO’s operations or objectives. Each revision will be dated and approved by the Chief Executive Offer.
Through continual review and improvement, Banhoek Chilli Oil aims to balance growth with responsibility, by delivering exceptional flavour while contributing positively to people and the planet.
